Cities in the Middle ages

Cities The revival of trade at the end of the Dark Ages led to the growth of cities. Merchants resettled in old Roman cities, known as Bourgeoisies.

Women in Middle Ages Women supervised the households, cared for children, and managed finances. Helped their husbands with their trades. Women could take over a husbands craft

Industry and Guilds Guilds-businesses in Middle Ages Apprentice- Young person who would learn a craft. Worked for free. Journeymen-after 5-7 years of being an apprentice they would become a journeymen. A person who worked for other masters working for pay. Masterpiece- Quality finished piece by a Journeyman in their craft. Allowed them to become a Master.

Universities The Universities of today sprung from the middle ages. First university appeared in Italy. Soon after Paris formed their own University.

Oxford University that forms in Oxford England Students began studying grammar, logic, arithmetic, geometry, music, and astronomy Took 4-6 years to get a degree

Religion and Universities Theology-The study of religion and God. This was the most studied subject during the middle ages. Scholasticism- finding harmony between Christianity and Philosophy.

Saint Thomas Aquinas Aquinas taught that knowledge was gained through scripture, reason, and experience. Summa Theological- Saint Aquinas’s work that tried to reconcile with Aristotle.
