LATIFUNDIA Latifundia were large estates worked by slaves. Because the rich could afford to buy more and more land, most of the land was in the hands of a few rich people. link

LATIFUNDIA This created unrest with the poor. They had migrated in large masses into the city to try and find jobs, and felt that they weren’t being represented in the government. They no longer had economic opportunity, unable to buy land, which also meant they couldn’t serve in the army. Link

LATIFUNDIA The poor no longer had a chance to buy/rent any public land. The situation escalated until the Gracchus brothers tried to reform the system. link

Small farmers couldn’t afford to compete with larger farms. The larger farms, worked by slaves, bought the smaller farms. These were called Latifundia. As the farms grew in size, so did the unemployed population and their unrest. IMPORTANT STUFF
