Important Terms ► Punctuated Equilibrium - speciation happens in quick, rapid bursts, followed by periods of genetic equilibrium in between ► Spontaneous Generation – idea that life can arise from nonliving material ► Biogenesis – idea that life can arise only from living material

Important Terms ► Convergent Evolution – type of evolution where different species who live in the same environment start to evolve similar traits ► Divergent Evolution – type of evolution where the same species become separated and evolve different traits due to different environments

Earth History ► Scientists believe that the continents of today once formed a super continent called PANGAEA ► Rocks found on earth have been dated to be 4.6 billion years old ► Paleontologists use fossils to study early life ► Scientists think the earliest life forms were formed through spontaneous generation
