Learning outcomes I can: Before the unit I have learned this I have revised this I can identify elements and compounds from their names. (Level 5) I can explain the difference between elements and compounds using ideas about atoms. (Level 6) I can talk about how the Periodic Table is arranged in groups and periods. (Level 3) I can tell if an element is a metal or non-metal by looking at the Periodic Table. (Level 4) I know some properties and uses of metals and non-metals. (Level 4) I can identify whether an element is a metal or a non-metal from its properties. (Level 5) I can use the Periodic table to make predictions about the properties of elements. (Level 7) I can use information about chemicals to write down a detailed risk assessment. (Level 6) I can use my observations to explain when a chemical reaction has happened. (Level 6) I can summarise chemical reactions using word equations. (Level 6) I can describe how distillation separates mixtures. (Level 5) I can explain how a mixture is different to a compound or element. (Level 5) I can talk about why the total mass does not change during an experiment. (Level 6) I can discuss how chemicals can be used for both peaceful uses and in war. (Level 5) I can use symbol equations to show what happens during reactions (Level 7)

Learn about: What non-metals are like, and what they are used for The differences between metals and non- metals New materials for special used
6
Sulfur You find sulfur where you find volcanoes Sulfur is a non-metal Long ago, it used to be called brimstone Not many elements are non-metals Most non-metals are gases, one is a liquid and the rest are solids The properties of non-metals are generally the opposite of metals

To conduct or not conduct Energy ball demo
14
Uses of non-metals Although there are fewer non-metals than metals, they have a lot of important uses
16
Metals or non-metal?
17
Jasmine, Becca and Ryan have different ideas about how to decide which of these elements are non-metals and which are metals Jasmine suggests putting all the solids in one group as all metals are solid, the others are then non-metals Ryan thinks we should put all the conductors in one group as metals conduct heat well. All the others will be non-metals Becca disagrees and thinks that those that conduct electricity are metals so the others are non-metals
18
Question For Jasmine, Becca and Ryan, make a list of which elements they have decided are metals and which are non-metals Explain who has the best idea (6)

New materials from non-metals Scientists are able to make new materials from non-metals Carbon fibres are made from carbon Carbon is a weak, brittle substance but carbon fibres are very strong anf light The body of the Eurofighter is strengthened with a large proportion of carbon fibres As well as making the aeroplane strong and light, the carbon fibres make its body hard for radar to detect
