3 Educational survival skills What do we fear the most in daily life? -Stress…… -What is stress? -- stress is produced by events that are perceived as demands on time, energy and elements of a threat that resources available will not be enough to fulfill an obligation. In what ways the clinical environment is stressful? -Time. -Energy. -Responsibilities. -Beginners fear.

4 Educational survival skills What influence does stress have physiologically on us? -Fight-or-flight response….. -What is fight-or-flight response? -- It is the physiologic response to a real or imagined threat arising from emotions of both fear and anger. What happens during this response? -- Release of hormones to increase metabolism. -- Increase in heart rate and respiration. -- Stimulation of the central nervous system. How is it related to clinical environment? - For you to answer?????

How? -- Overcome your fear. How? 2.Time management -- Set parameters on available time. How? -- Control your indecision. How?

6 Educational survival skills What if intervention methods do not work? -Buffering….. -What is buffering? -- It is an activity that decreases the negative effects of stress but do not change the stressors. -What buffers activities can we use? 1.Nutrition: vitamins C & B support the immune system and provide extra energy to reduce stress. 2.Free your mind: exercise & self meditation help most people to relax and overcome the fear factor.

8 Introduction to clinical environment What is the purpose of clinical education? -The purpose is to ensure that a program graduate will competently perform a full range of radiologic procedures on children and adults. -Interactions between the students, hospital staff, inpatients and outpatients is an essential part of clinical education. -- How can we get educated from our interactions with others in hospital? -- For you to answer???

9 Introduction to clinical environment What are the three main educational domains? 1.The cognitive domain… -- It includes various levels of thought such as knowledge, understanding, reason and judgment. 2.The psychomotor domain… -- It includes behaviors involving physical actions, neuromuscular manipulations and coordination. 3.The affective domain… -- It includes behaviors guided by feelings and emotions that are influenced by one’s interests, attitudes, values and beliefs.

14 What are the major clinical policies? 1.Supervision: -Direct and indirect supervision is required to ensure progressive development of the student and to protect against any vital mistake. 2.Radiation protection practices: -Radiation protection device should always be part of the student uniform to measure radiation dose periodically. 3.Pregnancy: -Pregnant student or staff must report the case to the supervisor to prevent harmful situation or miscarriage from occurring.

15 Introduction to clinical environment 4.Professional ethics: -Students must strive to understand, appreciate and value the code of ethics in the hospital. -- Patient confidentiality and self discipline must be part of student professional ethics. 5.Professional appearance: -Acceptable and comfortable uniform (clothes) should be considered, avoiding extreme cosmetics, jewelry and hair styles.
