ΑΔΝ 1. State the steps required to begin an Alpha Delta Nu chapter 2. Identify challenges that may occur in establishing an Alpha Delta Nu chapter 3. List several possible student projects 4. Identify the role of the faculty advisor

ΑΔΝ  In the fall of l998, a proposal was presented to the nursing faculty at Prairie State College.  Elements:  Community college nursing students who excel academically in the nursing program need to be recognized for their scholarly efforts.  The organization should not be a “club” or an “activity”, but should include an element of service to the community as well as life-long learning.

ΑΔΝ  A faculty committee should be established to develop the requirements for membership, the academic standards that must be maintained and the type of recognition ceremony that should occur.  The society must have advisors from the nursing faculty.  The society must be recognized by the college as distinctly different from a club.

ΑΔΝ  In the fall of l999, the nursing department of Prairie State College established the Prairie State College Nursing Honorary Society.  The first advisors were Sr. Ida Green, Kathy Malic and Gwen Dean.  The constitution was created and the college officially recognized the society as a student organization.

ΑΔΝ  In February of 2000, Prairie State College held its first induction ceremony  five charter members of the society.  In 2005, Kathy Malic presented a poster about the PSC Honor Society to the N-OADN conference in Pittsburgh and received considerable interest.  From 2000 to 2008 there were 89 students inducted into the Prairie State College Nursing Honor Society.

ΑΔΝ

 At the 2009 winter meeting of I-OADN, Gwen Dean proposed that the local honor society adopted at Prairie State College become a template for a state wide society under the auspices of the Illinois Organization of Associate Degree Nursing.  The response was favorable to explore how this could be accomplished and a task force was selected to visit PSC in the summer to learn more about the society.

ΑΔΝ  At the spring I-OADN meeting of 2010 a formal motion was made and carried to establish the I- OADN Nursing Honor Society.  A committee was named to work out the details to establish the eligibility requirements, constitution, reporting procedures and the like. I was on this committee & have remained active with this initiative.  The honor society would be named Alpha Delta Nu for associate degree nursing.

ΑΔΝ

 In 2011, the I-OADN Nursing Honor Society steering committee presented a poster presentation at the N-OADN conference in Chicago.  A great deal of interest from many states was expressed to establish the organization at the national level.

ΑΔΝ

 At the 2011 November conference, the board of directors voted to establish Alpha Delta Nu as the national honor society for associate degree nursing students.  As of November 11, 2015 there are 97 chapters in 28 states
