Context Government initiative implemented 2001 Originally “Key Stage 3 Strategy” Aimed at addressing Key Stage 3 “dip” DfES funded consultants in LAs Focus on Teaching and Learning practice (e.g. 3 part lessons) Now also relating to Key Stage 4

Key Features Strategies to raise standards 11 – 16 Help students to achieve potential in National Curriculum subjects “Pedagogy and Practice” guidance for teachers CPD programmes Underpinned by: EXPECTATIONS, PROGRESSION, ENGAGEMENT and TRANSFORMATION

Evaluation (1) Apparent positive impact on raising Level 5 at end of KS 3 in Core Subjects Quality of teaching and learning improving as Strategy techniques applied Impact greatest in Schools where Strategy is led by a member of the Senior Leadership Team Intervention programmes not being as effective as Strategy hoped

Evaluation (2) Progress slow in developing Literacy and Numeracy across the curriculum Primary to Secondary phase transfer improving Lower achieving boys and those with EAL perhaps benefiting the most

Future The suspension of Key Stage 3 SATS has caused a re think in terms of the SNS focus Increasing weight now given to Key Stage 4 and the overall progress made 11 – 16 Likely that the SNS will undergo review evaluation and reform in the near future.
