DO NOW!! AGENDA  LW#2~ Paper Tower DUE DATES: FRIDAY JANUARY 22, 2016  H.W. #2~Force Review JANUARY 20, 2016  TAKE OUT YOUR NOTEBOOK AND TURN TO CONCEPT #3~”Unbalanced forces acting on an object affect the objects motion”  DRAW and LABEL an example of a BALANCED FORCE  DRAW and LABEL an example an UNBALANCED FORCE

UNBALANCED FORCES ACTING ON AN OBJECT AFFECT THE OBJECTS MOTION: 3 PROPERTIES OF FORCES ARE: -FORCES CAN PUSH -FORCES CAN PULL -FORCES CAN BE COMBINED BALANCED FORCE UNBALANCED FORCE 10 N NO CHANGE IN MOTION OBJECT MOVES IN DIRECTION OF LARGER FORCE NET FORCE = 20 N  NET FORCE=0 OR 30 N 10 N OBJECT MOVES IN DIRECTION OF LARGER FORCE NET FORCE = 40 N  2 OPTIONS

ANNOUNCEMENTS: WEEK 1 GRADES POSTED~PLEASE UPDATE GRAPH HOMEWORK #2 DUE FRIDAY QUIZ FRIDAY~FORCES, FRICTION, GRAVITY

LW#2 : PAPER TOWEr PROBLEM: How can elements of engineering help support an understanding of science? REFLECT: With the person sitting next to you, DISCUSS how science and engineering differ from one another

LW#2 : PAPER TOWEr BACKGROUND INFORMATION: Engineering (from Latin ingenium, meaning "cleverness" and ingeniare, meaning "to contrive, devise") is the application of scientific or practical knowledge in order to invent, design and build structures. Engineers use their knowledge of science, mathematics, logic and experiences to find suitable solutions to a problem.

LW#2 : PAPER TOWER THE RULES:  The towers will be built from floor level, not on tables.  The sheet of paper may be cut into pieces and reassembled as desired. Parts may be rolled, folded or slit.  Tape is to be used to fasten parts of the tower together. It MAY NOT be used to attach the tower to the floor or any other object. Excess tape MAY NOT be used to extend the height of the tower.  The tower shall be declared free-standing if it remains self- supporting for more than 30 seconds.  Height is determined by measuring the vertical distance from the highest point of the tower to the floor (towers must still be standing when measured). YOUR CHALLENGE: CONSTRUCT A FREE-STANDING TOWER OF MAXIMUM HEIGHT USING A SINGLE SHEET OF PAPER AND 30 cm of tape
