Learning Objectives 1.Name the three stages of the cell cycle and explain what happens in each. 2.Explain what DNA is, and what its role is in cell division.
2
The Cell Cycle What is the cell cycle? Cell cycle – regular sequence of growth and division that a cell undergoes. Do all cells go through cell division? No, some cells do not divide- nerve and cardiac muscle cells don’t. Why do cells go through cell division? For growth, repair, and development.

There are three stages to the cell cycle Stage 1Interphase Cell grows – (G1 phase)Cell grows – (G1 phase) Copies its DNA – makes exact copy of DNA (S phase)Copies its DNA – makes exact copy of DNA (S phase) Prepares to divide – produces structures needed to divide (G2 phase)Prepares to divide – produces structures needed to divide (G2 phase)

Stage 2 Mitosis http://www.brainpop.com/science/cellularlifeandgenetics/mitosis/ http://www.brainpop.com/science/cellularlifeandgenetics/mitosis/ One copy of the DNA is distributed to each of the two daughter cells DNA becomes condensed and is called chromosomes Chromosomes consist of 2 chromatids held together by a centromere. There are four phases of mitosis: Prophase Metaphase Anaphase Telophase http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=- 1ZvsYDTxc8&feature=related

Stage 3Cytokinesis Cytokinesis involves division of the cytoplasm and distributing organelles into each of the two new daughter cells. Cytokinesis marks the end of the cell cycle.
