4. Overview The Great Gatsby was written in the 1920’s by the author, F. Scott Fitzgerald. It was set in Long Island, New York in 1922. The narrator, Nick experiences a whirl wind of events when he and his very wealthy neighbor “Gatsby”, the main character, become friends. The story is symbolic of the culture of the 1920’s in America, transitioning from the hard-worker to the materialistic consumer. The author shows America as destroying the “American Dream”, and losing social and moral values. Return to title page Continue

5. Characters Daisy Buchanan: The narrator, Nick’s cousin, and the woman Jay Gatsby is in love with Tom Buchanan: Daisy’s husband who is having an affair. Wealthy by birth. Jay Gatsby: Main character (protagonist) living in a huge mansion in Long Island, where the story takes place. Nick Carraway: The narrator, who moves to a small house next to Gatsby on Long Island. Jordan Baker: Nick’s romance, self-centered friend of Daisy’s; also born into money. Myrtle Wilson: Tom’s secret lover. Return to title page
