4. Attendance Policy Mountain View’s attendance policy: 10 absences = NO CREDIT Tardy Policy: Tardiness is unacceptable. 3 Tardies = lunch or after school detention 4 Tardies = recommendation for Saturday School

5. Cell Phone Policy Must be turned off and out of sight during class. Please don’t call your child during class! If texting during class, cell phone will be taken away. Cell phone goes to the front office for pick up. Cell phone is placed on my desk for the entire semester.

6. Grading Policy Standard grading scale: 90+A 80-89B 70-79C 60-69D 59 & belowF The English department does not give extra credit. I do not “round up” grades at quarter.

7. Make-up Work Policy Absences: In case of absence, students have the same number of days as they were absent to turn in work without penalty. Late Work: Half credit Exceptions Incomplete Work: Not accepted

8. Presentation Policy If a student is absent on presentation day, a zero will be given for the assignment. Students must check their presentation on my equipment before presentation day— technology glitches may result in a student receiving a zero.

9. Curriculum American Literature is an elective English class. Goals: English is a skill based subject. 1. Develop critical thinking, reading, writing skills. 2. Increase academic rigor. 3. Utilize and reinforce time management skills. 4. Create unity and cooperation amongst students.

10. Literature Fiction & non-fiction pieces. Students will study: Primary historical documents: selections in textbook Short stories: selections from textbook Plays: The Crucible, Raisin in the Sun, The Glass Menagerie Poetry: Poetry Out Loud Novel: The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald Film: see selections on the class syllabus Please review all literature listed on class syllabus.

11. Goals for Literature: Prepare students to succeed in senior English and college English classes by developing their critical thinking and reading skills. Literature is a written imagination. Expose students to classic literature and develop their cultural literacy. Help students make literary connections: -with self -with other literature -with world & society

12. Goals for Writing: Prepare students to succeed in writing classes by developing their critical thinking and writing skills. Writing is thinking made visible. Solidify students’ basic writing skills. Develop students’ voice and personal style. -connotation vs. denotation -record their imaginations in writing (creative)
