1
TIPS FOR WRITING YOUR “DO SOMETHING” NARRATIVE Mr. Gunnink American Literature 2010-2011
2
Narrative/Essay Hybrid Tells a compelling story while also explaining your beliefs/reactions/growth Actual events in the narrative should be supplemented with commentary/explanation as you connect your actions to your beliefs. Your beliefs determine your actions and your actions demonstrate your beliefs.
3
Purpose Why are you telling this story? (other than for the grade) What do you want the reader to know/learn? (events, ideas, messages, lessons)
4
Setting, Character, Plot Status Quo- What was the world of the story at the beginning of it? What is the protagonist like? Conflict- What is the spark that begins the story? What issues/obstacles must the protagonist face (internal and/or external)? Resolution- What is the results of the protagonist’s struggles? New Status Quo- How has the world or the protagonist been changed by this experience?
5
Conclusion What do you want to echo in the mind of your reader? What do you want them to take away? The ending should be memorable and point towards the future
6
Introduction The introduction should establish the conflict without giving away too much of the story (Preview) Should make the reader want to continue reading Surprise, Mystery, Thoughtful Question(s)
7
Sequence Chronological- Begin at the beginning, end at the end In medias res- Start in the middle, then catch us back up Flashbacks- Interrupt the present narrative for key events from the past Weave- Two or more connected stories told at alternating times Commentary- Insert information, reaction, or analysis outside of the story but relevant to it
8
Tone What emotional response are you trying to get from your reader? Is this going to be funny? Serious? Uplifting? Upsetting? Heartbreaking? Inspiring? Whatever you choose, consider language that emphasizes that emotion (especially consider first and last sentences).
