The Yasa He even made reforms concerning wells. No animal could be watered from the source of the well. No one could wash in running water. This cut down on the contamination of water, which to desert people was a precious commodity. The theft of animals is still a great offense in Mongolia. In recent history, the Mongols would not let a stray animal drink from a well, not for contamination reasons but so that the animal’s thirst would take it back to its owner and no one would be accused of stealing it.
