WHAT IS A NARRATIVE PYRAMID? A narrative pyramid is a great way to organize events from a story. The chart exposes multiple components of the story, such as characters, plot, conflicts and organization. The way the chart is organized is so that students may build what they know about the story from the top down to the bottom of the pyramid

How Does a Narrative Pyramid Work? The narrative pyramid starts at the top by asking the students to list one main character. Next, students are asked to go down from the top to the second box and use two words to describe the character. Third, the students are asked to use three words to describe the setting. Fourth, the students are asked to use four words to describe the problem. Fifth, the students are asked to record 5 events (the plot); continue adding components to the plot until at the seventh box.

DO I HAVE TO USE THE PYRAMID AS AN INDEPENDENT PRACTICE ACTIVITY? No, you do not have to. You may use this activity as guided practice or fill it out as you read. Therefore, the activity is a: During Reading Activity ____X_________ After Reading Activity ____X_________

TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATION Teachers may opt to use an app like Socrative to help them design mini quizzes for the class to take. This may assist students in class so that they may fill out the chart together. We will use this software to show you how this strategy can help students review for an upcoming quiz or test on what they have read.
