HYPERBOLA DO NOW: GET READY FOR NOTETAKING!!!!!! What is the difference between a hyperbola and an ellipse? What are the parts of a hyperbola and how do I graph it? How do I convert to standard form?
2
Definition of Hyperbola The difference of the 2 distances from the foci to any point (x,y) must be constant. What is the difference between a hyperbola and an ellipse? What are the parts of a hyperbola and how do I graph it? How do I convert to standard form?
3
HYPERBOLAS 2 Types 1.Vertical (along the y-axis, if the bigger number(a) is under y²) 1.Horizontal (along the x-axis, if the smaller number (b) is under y²)
4
Finding the Foci c²=a²+b² c is the foci Example for the hyperbola

What is main difference between graphing a hyperbola and an ellipse? When graphing an ellipse we just use vertices. When graphing a hyperbola we use vertices and asymptotes. The asymptotes are found by using our old friend “slope” (rise/run) Start at your center and count the change in y over the change in x to the corners of the box.

Example 1:

Example 2: Center not (0,0) a= 4 b= 3 FOCI
8
Convert to standard form Then we find a, b, c, center, etc and graph!!!!
