Phenomenal Women By Talia Claucherty Poem by Maya Angelou

Recital  “Pretty women wonder where my secret lies. I'm not cute or built to suit a fashion model's size But when I start to tell them, They think I'm telling lies. I say, It's in the reach of my arms The span of my hips, The stride of my step, The curl of my lips. I'm a woman Phenomenally. Phenomenal woman, That's me.” ~Maya Angelou

Historical Importance  These words are historically important because it shows women don’t need to be perfectly in line with what others want them to be. We are equal and should have equal rights, despite being different. This poem makes others realize every person should have a say in the government that effects them, and all the people around them. It has greatly changed the perspective of government.

Opinion  This poem was wonderful. It’s a master piece that is spoken clearly and directly. Maya focuses on the power of herself as a woman and her inner beauty and grace as well as her physical appearance. I believe anybody could relate to this poem.

Facts  Sandra Day O’Connor was the first woman on the Supreme Court, 1981.  Kathryn Bigelow became the first woman to win an Oscar for best Director, 2010  Women in the U.S. earn just over 77 cents for every one dollar men earn  The first woman to run for president was Victoria Woodhull, who campaigned for the office in 1872 under the National Woman’s Suffrage Association. While women would not be granted the right to vote by a constitutional amendment for nearly 50 years, there were no laws prohibiting a woman from running for the chief executive position.
