2 Your Body Image Body Image –The way you see your body During your teens years your body will change Some teens may compare their bodies to those of models, athletes, or actresses Peers also influence body image Try to accept yourself the way you are

3 Fad Diets Fad diets are neither safe not reliable way to lose weight Fad Diet = weight-loss plans that tend to be popular for only a short time –Tend to promise quick and easy weight loss –People will gain weight after stopping the diet Weight Cycling –Repeated pattern of losing and regaining body weight

4 Types of Fad Diets Miracle foods –Promise to “burn fat” by eating lots of a single food or type of food Magic combinations –Promise certain foods will trigger weight loss when eaten together Liquid diets –Replace solid foods with ultra low-calorie liquid formulas Diet pills –Some claim to suppress your appetite, others claim to “block” or “flush” fat from the body Fasting –Deprives the body of needed nutrients and can result in dehydration

5 Eating Disorders Extreme, harmful eating behaviors that can cause serious illness or even death Classified as mental illnesses Linked to depression, low self-esteem, or troubled personal relationships Types: –Anorexia Nervosa –Bulimia Nervosa –Binge Eating Disorder

6 Anorexia Nervosa An eating disorder in which an irrational fear of weight game leads people to starve themselves People with anorexia see themselves unrealistically as overweight even when they are dangerously thin Develop obsessive behaviors related to food –Avoiding food and meals –Eating only a few kinds of food in small amounts –Weighing or counting the calories in everything they eat –Exercising excessively –Weighing themselves repeatedly

7 Bulimia Nervosa An eating disorder that involves cycles of overeating and purging, or attempts to rid the body of food Binges –Eating a huge amount of food in a single sitting –Feel out of control Purge –Force themselves to vomit or take laxatives to flush the food out of their system, might also fast or exercise frantically

8 Binge Eating Disorder An eating disorder in which people overeat compulsively Eat large amounts of food in a short period of time Feel guilty or disgusted about their behavior but feel powerless to stop it

9 Health Consequences Anorexia Nervosa –Malnutrition and starvation –Bones become brittle –Reduction in organ size –Body temperature, heart rate, and blood pressure may drop –Heart problems, and sudden cardiac death Bulimia Nervosa –Dehydration, sore and inflamed throat, and swollen glands –Teeth damage –Possible damage to stomach, intestines, and kidneys –Chemical imbalances from purging can cause irregular heart rhythms, heart failure and death Binge Eating Disorder –Overweight or obese –High blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease

10 Seeking Help Medical Help Counseling Nutritional guidance Doctor’s care Extreme cases, hospital stay –Anorexia patients the goal is to restore the body’s weight –Bulimia patients the goal is to break the cycle of binging and purging
