Where did the wiki originate?

Development

Research from lead thinkers Jimmy Wells and Larry Sanger creators of Wikipedia Wikipedia Binbin Zheng and Xiuli Zhuang studied the effects of wikis in collaboration. They found that wiki technology is a form of a new learning style that is causing problems for traditional learners. Binbin Zheng and Xiuli Zhuang

Development Some problems that were experienced during development were overcome by Providing managers of wikis to regulate user access Technologies for a print version of wikis is improving SPAM and vandalism can be avoided by requiring a login to access the wiki, this allows for the use of automated spam bots

Development

Commercialization

Commercialization Evan Prodromou -WikitravelWikitravel

Commercialization Evan Prodromou’s Rules for Commercial Wikis Have a notable purpose Demonstrate value Be transparent Extract value where you provide value Set boundaries Be personally involved Run with the right crowd

Innovation- Decision Process

Knowledge- 1995 InvitationToThePatternsList

Persuasion- With the Invitation To The Pattern List being published, Portland Pattern Repository heard of wiki and saw it as a way to collaborate.Portland Pattern Repository

Decision

Implementation- Portland Pattern Repository in May 1995 was the first to make the decision to utilize a wiki. Immediately popular due to the increased accessibility of the Internet and a group that were knowledgeable in the web and interested in pattern language.pattern language This wiki is still in use today.

Confirmation

S-Curve on the Diffusion of Wiki Technology 1995- Creation of Wiki by Ward Cunningham for Portland Pattern Repository. 2001- Wikipedia created by Jimmy Wales and Larry Sanger. 2010- Wikis are being created and used by businesses, government, educational institutions, and individuals. To date (2010) Wikipedia has over 2,500,000 pages.

Rate of Adoption of Wiki Innovators and Early Adopters

Attributes to Reach Critical Mass of Wikis in Education Relative Advantage

Attributes to Reach Critical Mass of Wikis in Education Complexity Easy to create and navigatecreate and navigate Early adopters can be “vicarious trials” for later adopters Early adopters can provide support to guide later adopters

Attributes to Reach Critical Mass of Wikis in Education Observability

Decentralized Diffusion System

Critical Mass of Wikis How can critical mass be reached? In education I have found that to have universal adoption of a new technology it is best to get leaders in the schools on board that will use their influence to persuade others to adopt new ways of doing tasks. Implying that wikis will eventually be required would persuade some to adopt faster so that they will be ready and knowledgeable when wide spread adoption is not an option.

Here is what Ward Cunningham has to say about the benefits of wikis.

Most importantly this is what a teacher has to say about wikis.

Here is a clip that shows teachers and students using a wiki Note: There is a Google ad before the clip.

Wikis are the “simplest database that could possibly work.”

I believe that of wikis are--- I believe that of wikis are---
