4 Government A government is the body within an organization that has the authority to make and enforce rules, laws and regulations. Process by which groups of people make decisions. – Communism – Democracy – Socialism – Monarchy

5 Geography The physical features and location of a place or region – The Ganges river delta in India and Bangladesh is one of the most fertile regions in the world. – The volcano Mount St. Helens in Washington, United States.

6 History A record or account, often chronological, of past events, developments, etc. Those who cannot learn from history are doomed to repeat it - George Santayana

7 Culture A learned way of living that is shared by a group of people An individual’s culture is reflected in his or her behaviors and actions

8 Cultural Similarities and Differences Similarities occur because all humans have similar needs and wants Everyone has a need for food, housing, transportation, family love, creative expression, entertainment etc. Differences occur because of location, geography, beliefs, circumstances etc. Diversity is normal and should be respected

9 These cultural “universals” include: – Religion/spirituality – Values – Games – Music – rites of passage – Education – Leadership – Traditions While cultures differ in many ways, there are certain things that all cultures have.

10 - Religion Particular institutionalized or personal system of beliefs and practices in relation to a god or gods. – Buddhism – Christianity – Islam – Hinduism – Judaism

11 - Social Arts, entertainment, transportation, literature, music, and technology
