GOES-R High Latitude Proving Ground Status November 23, 2010 Reported by Tom Heinrichs UAF-GINA With thanks to colleagues at GINA, CIMSS, STAR, and NWS Okmok Volcano July 13, 2008 (MODIS from UAF-GINA) 1

High Latitude GOES-R Proving Ground Status November 23, 2010 Real-time MODIS data (being used as GOES-R proxy data) is being pulled from UAF-GINA to CIMSS. Sample volcanic ash and cloud product cases have been produced and visualized in CIMSS AWIPS. GOES-R products flowing to UAF-GINA LDM since October 25. Will be moving to local Alaska processing of products sooner rather than later in order to reduce latency, which is currently about 20 minutes due to transfer MODIS data. 2

High Latitude GOES-R Proving Ground Status continued Orientation demonstration via gotomeeting with SOOs performed on November 2 nd. D2D (AWIPS visualizer) is running at UAF GINA so we can check product presentation. WFO forecaster job shadows performed the week of November 15. Numerous interactions between UAF-GINA and Alaska NWS IT staff working on firewall exceptions for LDM and network bandwidth issues; progress anticipated at the end of November following NWS firewall hardware upgrade On-site visit to Madison; Volcanic ash workshop in Anchorage; Interactions with NWS science staff; Hosted visit by SPoRT 3

High Latitude Proving Ground Near-Term Plans Training: provide asynchronous training materials to WFOs – Less than 30 minute modules – Narrated PowerPoints or videos – Written tutorials (PDF) Information Technology – Configure LDM connections between UAF-GINA and Alaska NWS – Consolidate University of Alaska LDMs – Continue to work on bandwidth issues 4

High Latitude Proving Ground Near-Term Plans, cont’d Evaluation – Develop surveys following deployment of data into Alaska NWS AWIPS (planned – early December 2010) – Gather feedback from forecasters (8 weeks – end of January 2011) – Prepare report (2 weeks – mid February 2011) 5

High Latitude GOES-R Proving Ground Experiment Product Overview 6 Slides from training provided by Mike Pavolonis

GOES-R Proving Ground Products (MODIS is used as a proxy for the GOES-R ABI) Cloud type (phase) Fog/low cloud probability Volcanic ash mass loading, height, and particle size SO 2 detection and loading 7 Pavolonis slide
