Reform and Assassination The Spoils System was viewed negatively by some Republicans (Half- Breeds) Many Republicans LOVED Spoils System (Stalwarts) Some were on the fence (Mugwumps) In 1880 the Republicans nominated a Half- Breed, James Garfield, for President and he won

Populism Reading In 1892 a 3 rd Party started in the West calling themselves the Populists. The Populists were intent on REFORM – They did not want to see only the Spoils system end but many other corrupt political practices. – The Populists envisioned a Voting Coalition (add this to your list in a blank spot) made up of Farmers and Industrial laborers (The masses)
