2 School Magic uses road sign shapes to emphasise the type of message being delivered, there were eight messages delivered in the presentation.

3 Discussion Points When is the right age to ride on a road with a cycle? What training can you get before you start to ride on roads? Why is it important to wear a cycle helmet? Do cyclist have to obey the rules of the road? Where are safe places to learn to ride a bike? What magic did we see that related to this sign? The School Run – This is a story about getting to school and Helen who cycles to school every day. Emilie's Bike – This is a story about Emily who had an accident when cycling. Traffic light trick – Cyclist need to be aware of traffic lights and their meanings.

4 What magic did we see that related to this sign? Elephants Memory Rings – Wearing something bright does not mean you have to wear fluorescent clothing you can wear reflective tags or armbands as well as a scarf or hat. Next time you buy a school bag buy a bright one that can be seen at night. Eric the Clown – This is a story about Eric and his accident. Was it because he had a dark jumper on, did this help, or was it because he just run across the road without looking or thinking? Discussion Points Why is it important to be seen at night? Do you have to dress in florescent bibs to be seen? What simple things can you do to be seen at night?

5 What magic did we see that related to this sign? Marys Skipping Rope – This is a story about Mary who tied knots in her skipping rope to remember to cross the road safety. Elephants Memory Rings – One of the Elephants used his rings to remember to Stop, Look, Listen and Think. Sara's Road Safety Bag – Sarah’s brother made this bag to keep his sister safe. This is the Road Safety trick you can learn at home. Discussion Points Why is it important to always remember to Stop, Look, Listen and Think before you cross a road? Why do you think children are more at risk than adults when crossing roads?

6 What magic did we see that related to this sign? Mary’s Skipping Rope – Mary tied knots in her skipping rope to remember the best places to cross the road. Pelican Crossing – This trick explained each of the 5 types of crossings. Different crossings work in different ways you should get to know how different crossings work and how you can best use them. Elephant Memory Rings – This is a reminder to Stop, Look, Listen and Think even on crossings. Cars do not always obey traffic lights or the rules of the road, and that’s when accidents occur. Discussion Points Where are the safest places to cross the road? Is it safe to cross at a Pelican crossing when the man is RED?

7 What magic did we see that related to this sign? Mary’s Skipping Rope – How does Mary remember the safest place to cross the road. Pelican Crossing – Can you remember the 5 types of crossing and why should you use one of them? Eric the Clown – Did Eric use the zebra crossing when he visited his friend? Sara’s Road Safety Bag – Why was Billy concerned for his sisters safety when she was out on her own? Discussion Points Why is it important to be able to see traffic when crossing the road? Why should you never cross the road between closely parked cars? If you cannot see the cars using the road when you cross, can they see you?

8 What magic did we see that related to this sign? Granny the Crossing Lady – This is a story about granny. The most important part of this trick was when granny disappeared and the statistics of the number of children killed or injured on our roads last year were shown. Discussion Points Why is it dangerous to fool around on roads? Why is it important to behave in a sensible way on public transport? Is it good to put your feet on the seats of busses or trains? Why should you not cause a nuisance on public transport? What can happen if you make yourself a nuisance on a bus?

9 What magic did we see that related to this sign? The School Run – If you walk to school, always use the school crossing or other crossings to cross roads. Sara’ Road Safety Bag – Be aware of the rules of how to cross a road safely Discussion Points Why is walking a good form of exercise? Is travelling to school by car good for the environment? Is it healthier to walk short distances than travelling by car? Who travels to school by car but feels they could walk?

10 What magic did we see that related to this sign? Granny the Crossing Lady – Here you have the real numbers for accidents where you live for last year. By taking part in the Road Show and remembering the messages your have seen today you can avoid being one of those statistics. Discussion Points Who are the most vulnerable group of people on our roads? Accidents happen quickly, how can you avoid being a statistic? How many children are killed or seriously injured in road accidents last year?
