Warm Up Quiz Keep only your notebook on your desk for the Quiz. Everything else under your desk.
2
Principle of Parsimony (p.17) - the “simplest solution” is preferred unless other evidence leads you to another plausable theory
3
Principle of Parsimony - One should always choose the simplest explanation of a phenomenon, the one that requires the fewest leaps of logic
4
Locard’s Principle Paste Locard’s Principle into your notebook. Highlight each type of evidence. (pg. 17) Give a scenario of how each piece of evidence could be transferred at a crime scene.
5
Locard’s Principle “Wherever he steps, whatever he touches, whatever he leaves, even unconsciously, will serve as a silent witness against him. Not only his fingerprints or his footprints, but his hair, the fibers from his clothes, the glass he breaks, the tool mark he leaves, the paint he scratches, the blood or semen he deposits or collects. All of these and more, bear mute witness against him. This is evidence that does not forget. It is not confused by the excitement of the moment. It is not absent because human witnesses are. It is factual evidence. Physical evidence cannot be wrong, it cannot perjure itself, it cannot be wholly absent. Only human failure to find it, study and understand it, can diminish its value.”
6
Crime Scene Reconstruction Crime scene reconstruction is an organized, logical process of arriving at proper, scientifically supported conclusions about the events surrounding the creation of the crime scene being examined.
7
Crime Scene Reconstruction Crime scene reconstruction must be performed methodically. The crime scene reconstructionist seeks to analyze the items of evidence--both deposited and removed--and apply an ordered, logical method that will result in the determination of event sequences that, in turn, lead to a clear picture of what occurred during the commission of the crime.
8
Crime Scene Survey Walk-Through : Preliminary crime scene survey performed to orient the crime scene investigator to the scene and the physical evidence at the scene.
9
Guidelines to follow in a walk-through 1.Use the walk-through to mentally prepare a reconstruction theory that can and should be changed as the scene investigation progresses. 2.Note any transient (temporary) or conditional (the result of an action) evidence that requires immediate protection and processing. 3.Be aware of weather conditions and take precautions.
10
Guidelines to follow in a walk-through 4.Note all points of entry or exit and paths of travel within the scene. (Be aware of alteration or contamination made by the first responder) 5.Record initial observation of who, what, where, when, and how 6.Assess the scene for personnel, precautions, or equipment that will be needed.

Missing Iphone Assignment-pg. 19 Mrs. Jenschke left her Iphone on her desk this morning before she went downstairs to make copies for today’s lesson. There were only 3 people, besides Mrs. Jenschke who have keys to the classroom: Ilene Quach the Student Council President Dr. Katz the teacher across the hall Principal Brandi Hosack
13
Suspects We know that Ilene had been waiting outside Mrs. Jenschke’s door this morning for about 30 minutes since 8 am. When Mrs. Jenschke finally arrived and realized she had forgotten the meeting, Ilene was very upset that Mrs. Jenschke never sets reminders to help her remember important meetings. This particular meeting was very important and Ilene will not get into UT because Mrs. Jenschke missed her deadline to submit her letter of recommendation. All of her hard work in those difficult classes are all for not.
14
Suspects Principal Hosack has a master key to all the classrooms. She was looking for Mrs. Jenschke this morning but says she was unable to find her. Principal Hosack hates when teachers have their phones out at school, claiming it sets a bad example for the students. Principal Hosack arrives at school every morning at 7 am and was super angry that Mrs. Jenschke wasn’t here especially because she hadn’t finished her coffee yet.
15
Suspects Dr. Katz also has a master key and was looking for Mrs. Jenschke in the morning as well. Dr. Katz needed Mrs. Jenschke’s final approval forms for the conference they will go to in November. They are friends and Dr. Katz is a avid Iphone 6 user. She always has the coolest apps and Mrs. Jenschke is always asking Dr. Katz to help her download new apps to her phone.
16
Initial Walk Through- pg 19 answer the following questions 1.Before you start your initial observations, what is the first thing that must happen at a crime scene? Why? 2.Record your initial observations of the crime scene here. What are the first things that you notice?
17
Initial Walk Through- pg 19 answer the following questions 3.List all of the possible points of entry and who has access to these.
18
Initial Walk Through- pg 19 answer the following questions 4.What is the macroscopic crime scene? Explain. 5.Describe the locations of at least 3 different microscopic crime scenes.
19
Initial Walk Through- pg 19 answer the following questions 6.Is Mrs. Jenschke’s classroom a primary or secondary crime scene? Explain. 7.What search method (spiral search, grid, etc) did you choose? Why?.
20
Initial Walk Through- pg 19 answer the following questions 8.Record all pieces of physical and trace evidence that you find. Be sure to number them and explain what the evidence is and where you found it.
21
Reconstruction Theory – pg 18 The crime scene has been secured. Now, your job is to search and assess the crime scene using the method of your choice. You must take detailed notes about what you see (please do not touch or contaminate any evidence), note all possible points of entry, and identify all physical and trace evidence. After your initial observation you will create a reconstruction theory based on what you observed.
22
Reconstruction Theory – pg 18 If you had to prepare a reconstruction theory right now, what would it be? Be sure to include who, what, when, where, why and how.
23
Reconstruction Theory – pg 18 Exit Ticket Write down 2 questions (each) that you would like to ask the possible suspects.
