Interpersonal Relationships & Social Interaction Can our relationships exist WITHOUT IPC? So we need communication.. What Else? – A Healthy Self Image (ur idea of what u r) – Compared to other people/What am I worth? – Is a Positive Self Image NECESSARY?

3 Elements of Self Image What U think of YOURSELF What U think OTHER people think of U What U would LIKE ur image 2 B Lets analyse ourselves… If I think I have lovely red hair and I think my students think so to & I receive compliments from them on my red hair = Healthy Self Image If I think I’m skinny & my friends/family say I should really start loosing weight = Negative Self Image

5 Dimensions/Areas in our lives where Self Image plays a role (thus, affects what we think of ourselves) 1.Physical dimension (What I think of my body) 2.Skill dimension (I believe I can do) 3.Intellectual dimension (How intelligent I am) 4.Psychological dimension (The type of personality I believe I am) 5.Sexual dimension (What I believe how male/female I am, and how attractive)

WHAT IS PERCEPTION? The process by which we Select, Organise and Interpret Stimuli To the 5 senses (sight, sound,smell,touch,taste) Thus – It’s the WAY we give MEANING to the WORLD AROUND us..

We perceive things differently, due to our Filters (almost like lenses you look through) PERCEPTUAL FILTERS – Physical (deaf/blind/cant see or hear well) PSYCHOLOGICAL FILTERS/SETS – Previous experiences/our expectancies etc – For example – if you’ve been cheated on by your boyfriend and was heart broken, youll struggle to trust the next one easily
