Identifying Health Risks Risk Behaviors: Actions that can potentially threaten your health or the health of others 6 behaviors that account for most of the deaths & disabilities among young people: Tobacco use Unhealthy dietary behaviors Inadequate physical activity Alcohol and other drug use Sexual behaviors (can result in what??) Behaviors that contribute to unintentional injuries and violence

Risks & Consequences Cumulative Risks: Are related risks that increase in effect with each added risk, or combinations of risky behaviors. These may be repeated behaviors or combinations of poor choices. Examples: Smoking, eating a fast food meal, texting while driving………can you name any more???

Partner Activity Rate the following risky behaviors 1-10 1 being low & 10 being high. Bungee Jumping Sky diving Eating fast food 3 days a week Asking someone out on a date that you don’t know very well Not wearing a seatbelt Sharing a water bottle Riding home with someone who’s been drinking

How to Avoid or Reduce Risks Prevention: Taking steps to keep something from happening or getting worse. What are some things we do (or have already done) to prevent health problems? o Abstinence: A deliberate decision to avoid high risk behaviors. o What are some things we should abstain from?

Promoting Your Health Understanding how your decisions impact your health will inspire you to adopt healthful behaviors. Positive choices can promote wellness and prevent the development of disease.

Lifestyle Factors Positive lifestyle factors include: Getting 8 hours of sleep each night Starting each day with a healthy breakfast Eating a variety of nutritious foods each day Being physically active for 30-60 minutes most days of the week Maintaining a healthy weight Abstaining from smoking or using other tobacco products Abstaining from the use of alcohol, and other drugs
