Imagine you are a part of a research group that has been chosen to set up a research station in Antarctica. One of the first tasks of the group will be to form a governing council for the new settlement. You will generate ideas for the way they would choose leaders and how they would make and enforce rules. How have your ideas been influenced by your heritage? Philosophers that Influenced our Government Many of the rights that American citizens enjoy today can be traced back to the political and legal traditions of England. When English people began settling here in the 1600s, they brought with them a history of limited and representative government.

Where did the framers get the ideas for our government? English settlers in American colonies established traditions that they had learned in England.

John Locke (English) How did his ideas about government influence American government? His policy proposals for checks and balances later followed in the US Constitution. He believed that revolution in some circumstances was an obligation. He argued for broad religious freedom

Thomas Hobbs (English) How did his ideas about government influence American government? A diverse group of representatives would prevent a sovereign from being cruel and unfair. To offset the growing influence of business, a representative could speak in government on behalf of the people.

Jean Jacques Rousseau (French) How did his ideas about government influence American government? He fought for individual freedom. He also fought against the absolute power of church and state.

Baron de Montesquieu (French) How did his ideas about government influence American government? Montesquieu was credited with the identification of the separation of powers as a good model of government- the king, parliament, and the courts. Each branch of government would limit the power of the other two branches.
