Purpose The purpose of this activity is to make a working model of the lungs.

Materials 2 - straws 1 -plastic cup Scissors 2 -small balloons 3 -rubber bands 1 -large balloon

Procedures 1.Attach a small balloon to each of the straws using a rubber band to secure them with. 2.Put the two straws through the holes in the cup so that the ends of the straws with the balloons are on the inside of the cup. 3.Cut the neck off of the large balloon. 4.Stretch the large balloon over the opening of the cup. 5.Fasten the balloon with a large rubber band.

Questions 1.Pull down on the large balloon. Observe and describe what happens to the small balloons inside the cup. 2.Push up on the large balloon observe and describe what happens to the small balloons. 3.Label the model using the parts of the respiratory system each piece represents. 4. How are the human respiratory system and the model similar? 5.What are the limits to the model?
