Introduction Paragraph Remember the acronym ANT Attention Grabber Necessary Information (2-3 sentences) Thesis

Introduction Paragraph Avoid “I will talk about…” or “In this essay, I will discuss…” or any variation of that DO NOT use 1 st or 2 nd person! Avoid the word “you”! This is what most writer’s struggle with.

Introduction Paragraph Attention Grabber A way to grab the reader’s attention. It goes at the beginning of your essay—the first sentence of your introduction paragraph! Ask a thought provoking question Share a shocking fact or statistic Use a cool quote (does not count for evidence) Set a scene or a short little anecdote (story) for the reader Necessary Information The title of the work, the author, the year it was written Gives reader information about your topic, leading to the thesis Thesis The last sentence of the introduction paragraph, that tells the reader what your paper will be about. Be specific!

General—start with general back ground information about your topic Focused- focus on more specific details of your topic Topic- Your clear, specific thesis

Concluding Paragraph AVOID In conclusion In conclude To sum up In summary Or any variation of that 1 st and 2 nd person! WHAT IS IN YOUR CONCLUSION PARAGRAPH? Restate/reword your thesis; stress the importance of it. Restate your body paragraphs Universal significance/Call to Action What can the reader learn from your topic or argument? How can it be applied to life? **Restate/Reword does not mean copy word for word! It means paraphrase what you already have in your paper!

Now it’s time to wrap it up! This is it, the end to your essay! You have your thesis You have your evidence with analysis You have your topic and concluding sentences All that’s left are your introduction and conclusion paragraphs, and you have written your first essay for the year! Make sure to get Ms. Spector’s signature, signing off that your paragraphs are good and you are set! Bring in your rough draft and Ms. Spector’s signature of approval on all parts of the essay tomorrow for peer review and turn in with your final draft on Friday, October 9 th !
