Learning Objectives – 1.Why did the USSR lose its position as global superpower? 2.What were the consequences of its decline? 3.How and why is Russia emerging as a new superpower? (H/W) C/W Starter: From your knowledge from previous lessons, why did the UUSR fall?

2 Task: Let’s read page 164 together and then go through the main points.

3 LO1:- Why did the USSR lose its position as Global Superpower? 1980’s USSR Universal Literacy High Proportion of Educated Professionals Large Research Workforce All signs indicated Russia would be major power in the 21 st Century!

4 USSR had a COMMAND style Govt Therefore few personal freedoms In 1987 Gorbachev relaxed a number of controls. (This relaxation of economic rules was called “Perestroika” (meaning restructuring). LO1:- Why did the USSR lose its position as Global Superpower?

5 Alongside “ Perestroika” was a second reform called “ Glasnost”. “Glasnost” (meaning openness ) allowed the people of the USSR to have greater freedoms of speech, the press, and political parties. LO1:- Why did the USSR lose its position as Global Superpower?

6 Tasks – Using a map of the USSR…. 1.Describe how the map has changed from 1989 to today. 2.Use Mackinder’s Theory to explain why the USSR was / should be a world superpower. 3.Explain why the USSR no longer exists. Key word box – Cold War, Berlin Wall, Elections, USSR, Satellite States, Eastern Europe, Pro-Western, The EU, Mackinder, Heartland, Pivot, Resources. LO1:- Why did the USSR lose its position as Global Superpower? A Grade task - Referring back to Mackinder's Theory, how will the collapse of the USSR affect Russia?

8 LO2:- What were the consequences of the USSR’s decline? Problems created by the fall of the USSR. Political Social Environmental Economic Extension Task – Explain in your own words how the NOMENKLATURA profited from the fall of the USSR under Yeltsin’s reign.

11 Exam Questions Explain how Perestroika and Glasnost eventually led to the fall of the USSR. (10) Assess to what extent the consequences of the fall of the USSR were Social, Economic or Environmental. (15)
