5 Positive Learning Environment  Every day will be positive  Every day will be educational  Because every day you will follow directions and act appropriately in a variety of situations  Upon arrival to school, during breakfast and lunch programs, in cafeteria, hallways, stairwells, bathrooms, gym, and all classrooms, on stage, and at dismissal from school-you must act accordingly

6 Students Entering 6 th Grade Should:  Know how to use an assignment notebook  Record and complete assignments daily  Use appropriate and effective organizational skills  Effectively use class time provided for work completion  Consistently complete classwork and homework

7 Math  Recognize the value of showing work  Know basic addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division facts Demonstrate knowledge of:  Measurement  Place Value  Regrouping  Problem Solving

8 Language Arts  Know how to write a sentences and paragraphs  Know how to tell a main idea with supporting details Demonstrate knowledge of:  Parts of speech  Proofreading and editing skills  Writing styles  Spelling

9 Reading  Recognize that reading for different purposes requires repeated readings  Select appropriate text for personal reading  Share what you learned from text or how you made a connection Demonstrate knowledge of:  Making meaning strategies  Comprehension strategies

10 Science  Use the scientific method  Understand the relationship between science and technology  Understand the relationship between science and the real world  Be effective, cooperative, and productive during class investigations

11 Social Science  Be a historian, think about life during the time period you are studying  Understand the relationship between history and current events  Demonstrate a knowledge of continents, countries, and regions  Be effective, cooperative, and productive during class investigative reports

12 OUR 5 RULES  Be prepared for class and bring all of your materials to class daily  Pay attention, participate, and ask questions  Take responsibility for your actions  Respect yourself and others  Have a positive attitude and be willing to learn

13 To be ready, students will…  Arrive on time  Come prepared with student planner, binder, textbooks, pencils, paper, and homework  Be ready to work

14 To be responsible, students will…  Line up in the gym  Refrain from gum or item chewing  Refrain from making or breaking items like mechanical pencils or spirals out of notebooks  Write homework in student planner, if there is no homework assignment write NH or STUDY  Write the objective for the day in your notebook at the beginning of each class  Produce their own work  Maintain desk organization and cleanliness (locker and backpack also)  Leave the classroom in the order in which it was when they arrived  Complete all assignments, show all of their work, and have it in class when it is due  Complete assignments, quizzes, tests, assessments missed when absent (theirresponsibility)  Take ownership of their actions

15 To be respectful, students will…  Be polite and considerate  Demonstrate mutual respect  Follow directions the first time they are given  Speak only well of others  Keep body and objects to self, with no touching of others while in line, grouped, or seated  Refrain from speaking out loud without permission from an adult (no shout out)

16 Moving to Middle School  Middle school is when you think seriously about high school, college, and career  Our rigor will prepare your mind to be college and career ready  Our rules will prepare your attitude to be college and career ready

17 Homework  There will be enough daily homework to keep you busy for 60 minutes  You will be expected to work on your homework by yourself-no parents needed  Pick a regular time and place to do your homework for better focus and concentration  Expect to deal with negative consequences when you don’t have your homework-no parent note or call will change this  Expect to have some technology related homework assignments

18 Drama  There will drama that you have no control over, ignore it  Most drama is controlled by YOU, avoid it  There are friends and then there are REAL friends  Too tall, too short, too fat, too skinny, too…

20 Leave At Home  Excuses  Gum or candy  Toys, Legos, action figures  Lip gloss, hair bows, perfume, girly things  Phones, iPods, tech items  Gatorade, milk, juice-water bottle only  Put downs  Anything that does not help you read, write, or count with

21 Bring To School  Yourself  Uniform-belt, tie, etc.  School supplies: pencils, paper, binder system  Homework-unless you want to miss out on the fun stuff

22 SIXTH GRADE SCHOOL SUPPLY LIST  48 #2 Pencils  24 Ballpoint pens (blue, black, red)  Ruler  3-5 EXPO Dry Erase Markers  3-5 Highlighters  5 packs of Loose leaf lined paper (college or wide ruled)  6 Spiral Notebooks  6 colored pocket folders  3x5 ruled index cards  3x3 Post it notes  1 ½” 3 ring binder  Pencil Case  4 large boxes of Kleenex  Large container of antibacterial wipes  Gallon size Ziploc bags

23 Summer Packet  Do it  Check your answers and your handwriting  Turn it in on the FIRST day of school
