Unit 6 Seminar Nicole Heim, MPH, REHS Communicable Diseases

Reminder for Seminar  There is an 8 second delay.  Questions…  Type ??? before a question so I see it.

Assignments  Unit 9 Final Project due Tuesday, July 19 th by 11:59 PM MT in the Dropbox  Any questions?

Overview  Infectious Disease vs. Communicable Disease  Koch’s Postulates  Public Health Tools  Barrier Protections  Immunizations  Screening and Case Finding  Treatment for Primary and Secondary Infections and Maximizing Effectiveness  How to Eliminate a Communicable Disease

Infectious Disease vs. Communicable Disease  What is an infectious disease?  What is a communicable disease?

Koch’s Postulates  Used as a way to determine if an organism causes a specific disease  There are four conditions that will establish a cause-and-effect relationship  Modern Koch’s postulates

Public Health Tools  Barrier protections  Immunizations  Screening and case finding  Treatment for primary and secondary infections  Maximizing treatment effectiveness and prevent resistance

Barrier Protections  Examples:  Hand washing  Mosquito nets  Condoms  Masks and gloves  Isolation and quarantine

Immunizations  Passive immunity  Short-term and long-term protection  Inactivated and live virus  Some are unable to get vaccinated  Used to prevent disease in exposed individuals  Herd immunity

Screening and Case Finding  Screening  TB  STIs  Case finding

Treatment for Primary and Secondary Infections and Maximizing Effectiveness  Epidemiologic treatment  Antibiotic resistant organisms  TB  MRSA

How to Eliminate a Communicable Disease  Several criteria need to be in place  No animal reservoir  Short persistence in the environment  Absence of a long-term carrier state  The disease produces long-term immunity  Vaccination also establishes long-term immunity  Herd immunity protects those who are susceptible  Easily-identified disease  Effective post-exposure vaccination

Questions?  AIM: nicolerheim  Can contact any time I am online.  Email: nheim@kaplan.edunheim@kaplan.edu  Phone: 816.564.2201  Best time to call is in the evening.
