3 Smithsonian fellowships awarded competitively to graduate, pre-doctoral, or post-doctoral students or non-competitively to visiting professionals, students, scientists, or scholars Offered to individuals who design and develop proposals for independent study or collaborative research in fields pursued by and of interest to Smithsonian staff. Research fellows receiving stipends through the Smithsonian are generally appointed to terms lasting between 1 to 3 years; with documentation charting progress, research fellow terms may be extended to 5 years. Non-stipend visiting professional fellowship terms usually last one year. Most stipends range from $30,000 - $50,000, and may include travel, research, and health insurance allowances. F ELLOWSHIPS

4 Smithsonian internships are learning experiences guided by a mentor, occurring during a specific time frame, which provide benefits relating to an intern’s education, coursework, or career goals. With stated learning objectives and a mentor’s commitment, interns may be appointed for a term of up to six months. As an intern’s experiential education progresses, with revised learning objectives and a renewed commitment from a mentor, they may be reappointed. Stipend maximum is $600 per week full time May include one time travel I NTERNSHIPS

14 The title of Smithsonian research associate is offered to provide a formal scholarly affiliation with the Smithsonian. Research associates are not employees of the Smithsonian but with approval from appropriate channels, may apply for outside grants using the Smithsonian as a home institution. Research associates are nominated by Smithsonian research staff, or in special cases, by other research associates where an MOU with an outside organization applies. Regular research associate appointments are usually made for three years but can be renewed. Research Associates cannot receive a stipend as a research associate. R ESEARCH A SSOCIATES
