1 Ch. 1 Building Responsibility Ethics – a person’s sense of right or wrong.

2 What is communication? Communication is the process of sending and receiving messages, and it occurs whenever we express ourselves in a manner that is clearly understood.

3 The Communication Process COMMUNICATION BARRIER

4 The Communication Process Sender – one who talks Message – that which is sent or said Receiver – person who intercepts the message, then decodes or interprets it. Feedback – receiver’s reactions that let the sender know they “heard” the message. Communication Barrier – obstacle that gets in the way of effective communication.

9 Caring about your audience. Aristotle Logical Appeal - sequence and analysis. (facts) Emotional Appeal - “strike a chord.” Ethical (Personal) Appeal - honesty, integrity. “He didn’t think you needed Intrapersonal appeal.”

10 Building the Proper Motivation Stereotypes – labeling people in a group based on preconceived ideas as to what the group represents. –What are stereotypes you see every day? –How can those negatively effect communication? Setting an example. –How do you set examples with your communication?

11 In Review Intrapersonal communication is important because the speaker must communicate with self honestly and positively in order to make good decisions about communicating with others. A speaker should take into account the age, gender, background, education and socioeconomic standing of the audience before speaking.

12 In Review Cont….. Ethics are important to good communication because a good speaker will want to help the world become a better place and will care about others. Daniel Webster wanted to, at the very least, retain the ability to speak. You must have a strong value structure to become an effective speaker. The communication process does not need stereotyping.
