2 Miss-Metaphor  a comparison between two unlike things in which one thing becomes another thing- don’t use like or as  Example  The blades of grass were soldiers standing at attention.

3 Time for Practice: Write 3 metaphors. Remember, make a comparison between two things and DO NOT use the words “like” or “as” ________________________________________________________

4 Daisy-Dialogue  using direct quotes in your writing  Example  Mother emphatically yelled, “I won the lottery!”

5 Time for Practice: Write 3 sentences using dialogue and correct punctuation.  _________________________________ _________________________________

6 And-Adjectives/Adverbs  Use descriptive adjectives to modify nouns or pronouns. Use descriptive adverbs to modify verbs, adjectives, and adverbs.  Example  The luxurious hotel sat grandly in the middle of a glorious mountain valley.

7 I-Idiom  a group of words that have an “understood” meaning which is different from the meaning the words appear to have  Example-  It’s raining cats and dogs.

9 Saw-Sensory Words  appeals to your five senses  Smell  Taste  Touch/feel  Hear  Sight  Example  The hot, gooey chocolate chip cookies’ aroma was wafting from the kitchen.

10 Time for Practice: Think of being in a movie theater. Write a sentence for each sense.  What I see: _______________________  What I taste: ______________________  What I touch: ______________________  What I hear: ______________________  What I smell: ______________________ USE DESCRIPTIVE WORDS!!!!

11 Seven-Simile  comparison between two unlike things using a word such as like, as, than, or resembles  Example  The clouds were like fluffy white cotton balls floating in the sky.

12 Time for Practice: Write 3 similes.  _________________________________

13 Very-Vivid Verbs  avoid using am, is, are, was, were. Use action verbs  Example  He ran down the hall.  He darted quickly down the long corridor.

14 Time for Practice: Replace the underlined verbs to make them more vivid!  John ran down the hallway.  The girl and boy walked together to the playground.  The ball was hit over the fence.

15 Angry-Alliteration  the repetition of the same or very similar consonant sounds in words that are close together  Example  The kitchen is close to a quick renovation.

16 Time for Practice: Write 2 sentences with alliteration.  _________________________________ _________________________________ _________________________________

17 Pelicans-Personification  special kind of metaphor in which a non- human thing or quality is talked about as if it were human  Example  The sun is smiling down upon me.  The branch reached out and grabbed my sweatshirt.

18 Time for Practice: Write 2 sentences using personification.  _________________________________ _________________________________ _________________________________

19 Outside-Onomatopoeia  the use of a word whose sound imitates or suggest its meaning  Example  The steaks sizzled on the grill.

20 Time for Practice: Write 2 sentences using onomatopoeia.  _________________________________ _________________________________ _________________________________
