Bulletin A short news programme reporting only the most important information. Stories not covered in depth and gives listeners a general roundup of the days main news stories.

News Broadcast Features Copy Only - This is where a news reader sits there and talks about current events. This means no cross overs or interviews. With Audio Clips - This is where a news broadcast holds vocal interviews or information that has been pre-recorded. Voicers Wraps - hese are found at the ending of each different story. They are used to conclude a subject and continue onto the next one. Some of these could be ‘In other news’. This means the current story has finished and the next one is e.c.t

News Broadcast Features Live cross - This is where the presenter or newsreader cross over to another reporter, usually out of the studio and on location. Two way - Very similar to a live cross but can be pre-recorded, meaning it can be played out at any time.

Related to audience How the radio news relates to a specific target audience. How do you think these stations would target their audience?

Task 2 How might the style and wording of a news bulletin change depending on the target audience? Look at the 2 examples provided on Vibe Productions page and discuss the following on your Weebly page - Who are their target audiences? How does each news story address its audience? How do the scripts differ? Download each script from Vibe and upload them to your page with your answers.

Public Service Public service radio is publicly funded through licence fees. Due to it being publicly funded, the news is required to be un-biased and truthful. It should provide a representation of the UK; its nations, regions and communities. All news forms can be covered from current affairs to celebrity news. ALL of the BBC's TV and radio stations are required to follow these set guidelines http://www.bbc.co.uk/bbctrust/governance/tools_we_use/public_purposes.html

Commercial Most commercial radio stations serve a local or regional area and are owned by one of Global, Bauer and UTV. It's income is generated through advertisements and sponsorships throughout the broadcast. News broadcasts can be more targeted towards certain regions, cultures and genders.

Community Community radio serves geographic communities and communities of interest. They often cover very local or specific news relatable only to a smaller target audience. They are usually owned by the community that they serve and are non-profit. They are a good platform for potential broadcasters to gain industry experience. Often run as online stations to keep costs lower. News is usually fairly basic and may rely on second hand audio clips.

Small-scale Small scale radio would have an even smaller target audience than a community station. E.g. college radio. The news produced for a college radio would have a strong college focus and feature things such as college sports results.

Other Station Types Local – Radio that provides very local news Regional – Covers a larger area than local – more like county sized target audience. Whilst the BBC have large stations such as Radio 1, they also have regional stations allowing for the publics more specific interests to be met. National – Large scale stations that cover news stories that are considered the most important to the nation. e.g. Radio 2

Task 3 Find examples of the following types of radio station and discuss how their news reports meet their target audience with reference to specific stories Public Service Broadcaster Commercial station National Regional Local Community Again, provide links and times to support your findings.

Homework Record yourself delivering 2 news bulletins using the Radio Five Live and Radio 1 Newsbeat scripts. These 2 bulletins should be uploaded to LO3. (this might need to be done via YouTube) You only need the audio.
