www.gwp.org August2015 Three Main Issues & Research Focus for the FRP A.A. Need for innovative practices to influence investments and interventions in sustainable agriculture/ pastoralism intensification to cater for growing population B.B. Need for increased productivity and sustainability of ecosystems and the services they provide, particularly to women and youths. C.C. Need for basin-level infrastructure investments to sustain and enhance ecosystem services, improve livelihoods and alleviate poverty A. Guiding investments into farming C. Supporting basin level infrastructure investments B. Guiding the management of ESS under demographic pressure

www.gwp.org August2015 What strategic EBM interventions, investments in AWM and RRR and other sustainable livelihood practices may constitute an opportunity for the Volta- Niger Region? What approaches may be feasible to scale them up and out ? Key Projects : V6-IWMI: «viable and feasible AWM and RRR interventions and ‘business model’ V7-CA: «Performance of crop under the Bhungroo irrigation technology» V8-ILRI: « potential opportunities for out-scaling of promising ecosystem-enhancing biomass management practices? » V9-GIDA: « How do promising irrigation investments and interventions/ strategies address the trade-offs between economic, environmental and social objectives? » Main Research Question for Cluster 1
7
www.gwp.org August2015 What ecosystem services are used or not used in the region? How can existing SLM, AWM and RRR interventions be managed more effectively by local people to enhance gender and intergenerational equity as well as ecosystem services resilience? Key Projects: V8-ILRI: «Trade-offs and socio-economic barriers associated with biomass production utilization» V10-CIAT: « costs and benefits of specific SLM or EBM interventions » V11-CIRAD: «Ways of managing Bagre Dam to enhance equity and ecosystem services » Main Research Question for Cluster 2

www.gwp.org August2015 What potential information and relevant tools can be used to support governance and decision-making at policy and investment levels so as to up/ out scale EBM practices, viable and feasible AWM and RRR interventions and technologies identified or tested in the region? Projects: V6-IWMI : Effectiveness of 4 interventions in delivering multiple ecosystem services V9-GIDA : Spatial modelling for targeting and prioritizing innovations V10-CIAT : Appropriate incentives to encourage adoption of EBM/SLM Main Research Question for Cluster 3

www.gwp.org August2015 Bolster opportunities for increased agricultural productivity through key ecosystem services by generating and sharing knowledge that support change agents (local, national, regional levels) to strengthen local capacities and their ability to adapt to environmental and economic changes while sharing equitably returns across genders and ages. Goal of the Volta-Niger focal program
