Important People John Cabot- an Italian explorer working for the Queen of England who is said to be the first European to arrive to New Jersey The Duke of York- person given the charter to govern the colony, but did it through his elected officials Carteret and Berkeley- Lord Proprietors of NJ after the Duke sold them the colony

Formation First formed as part of New Netherlands until the Dutch surrendered Fort Amsterdam in 1664 British claimed that John Cabot was the first European to find New Jersey The Duke of York was granted a royal charter to sustain a proprietary gov. over New Jersey

Inhabitants Motivation- granting sections of lands to settlers (had to pay annual fees called Quit- rents) and religious freedom for all inhabitants Demographics- Many were Quakers and other people looking for religious freedom, slaves, other colonial men, and other English men

Structure of Society East and West Jersey was split apart and neither side communicated with the other Both were farming areas

Agriculture/ Environmental Factors Hot and humid summers; cold brutal winters Family farms mainly

Industry Trade mainly. The family farms usually fed themselves
