3 What do I Look Like? “This book Bites!“ “This is the best book my teacher ever made me read.” “This was boring!” Is Criticism just discussing what I like or don’t like about the author or his writing?

4 Let’s Define Criticism… Noun: 1. disapproval expressed by pointing out faults or shortcomings. 2. a serious examination and judgment of something. 3. a written evaluation of a work of literature.

5 …and Literary Criticism Noun: 1. a written evaluation of a work of literature. 2. the informed analysis and evaluation of literature.

6 Ohhh, Now I Get it! Literary criticism is just the informed written analysis or evaluation of a piece of literature. RIGHT ?

9 HISTORICAL APPROACH Author and his World Need to understand author’s world to understand his intent In this approach the work is jaded by the Author’s- prejudices, beliefs, time, and history. To understand the work you must know the author and his world.

10 Intertextual approach This approach compares one work with another. The texts may be written by the same author or within the same genre.

11 Reader-Response In this approach the reader creates meaning not the author. The reader’s view of the work is biased by their own background.

12 MIMETIC APPROACH This approach compares the work to how it relates or mirrors to the real world.

13 SYMBOLISM Black represents death Circle for life Law and Order Love Jesus or Fish

14 PSYCHOLICAL APPROACH This approach falls outside the T-map of the other approaches because it can fall into any of the other categories:
