2 Getting to know Zebras  Zebras are known as the king of stripes  Zebras are in the Equidae family  Zebras are only in Africa  They are in the horse family

3 Physical Features Black and white stripes They have a long black and white mane A zebras neck hangs down A zebras eye is shiny black They are 4 feet tall They can weigh up to 900 pounds They have a black nose They have hooves like shoes to run They have white ears

4 Life Span A zebra can live to be 10 to 25 years old In captivity they can live up to 35 years old Zebras are endangered--SAVE THE ZEBRAS! Zebras are getting killed

5 Habitat  Grass lands  Zebras only live in Africa  Big grassy fields of grass  Dirt  Bushes with small berries  Trees  Cliffs  Rocks  Planes

6 Climate It rains in April only Usually warm At night it drops 20 degrees In the morning it is humid It never snows Can reach burning hot weather

7 Food Zebras are herbivores They are on a grass diet most of the time Zebras, after galloping in grasslands, look for as much green grass as they can find And they rarely eat leaves They graze almost all day They eat small berries from bushes They eat leaves from small trees

9 Behavior Drinking in small water holes Rolling in the mud to let it dry and it cleans them Fighting for mates Resting in the shade Eating grass

10 Babies Zebras have one baby at a time When they are born they weigh 40 pounds The zebra lives on the mother’s milk for the first few days Then they start to nibble on grass at one year of age They are called foals

11 They have white fur that makes light bounce off and keeps them cool And big ears that lets heat out Their fur is thin that helps them stay cool Their stripes help them blend in with family They have long legs that help them run away from predators Physical Adaptations

12 Behavioral Adaptations Zebras take time to memorize each others stripes if a new zebra comes into the herd They clean each others fur so they can stay clean from the dirt They have a lot of courage to fight off predators They run a lot to help them lose weight

13 Physiological Adaptations They have light bones to help them run fast away from predators They have strong, flat teeth that help them eat grass they have a layer of fat under their skin to keep looking fit and not fat to predators They have very strong leg muscles and one kick can kill a puma

14 Fun Facts A zebra can out run a cheetah or a leopard by running in zig zag lines A baby zebra can run 40 miles per hour Zebras only live in Africa Zebras can live in a herd as big as 120 zebras
