Bamboo Housing (03-043) Fan Yiheng (2O2) Leon Ng Joo Keat (2O2) Ong Tiet Gan (2O3) Per Sheng Xiang (2P4)

Problem  It is very dangerous when we collect our clothes hung on the external laundry poles.  We have to bend our bodies over the window frame and go against the weight of our clothing and the bamboo pole.

Why it is a problem? The pole extends out too far and the fulcrum is at our hands. It is a third-class lever and based on physics, it will feel heavier. When hanging bed sheets, is extremely heavy and there is a need to overcome gravity as well as the weight of water. Many incidents of falling bamboo poles and even incidents of people falling out of their windows when hanging clothes have been reported.

Inspiration 1 ST One of our mothers complained about the inconvenience of keeping the bamboo poles 2 ND We then research the problem online 3 RD We thought of an invention to improve the current situation

Example 1  This was an incident reported on stomp.  It was very fortunate that the bamboo landed on a tree instead of someone.

Example 2  This website quoted a Sunday Times article.  A maid fell out of a 9 th floor window.  She was found at the foot of the building.  There were bamboo poles and a pile of clothes beside her.  The newspaper said she probably fell while trying to collect laundry.  Link: http://www.safetyphoto.co.uk/blog/tag/bamboo- poles/ http://www.safetyphoto.co.uk/blog/tag/bamboo- poles/

Example 3  The Straits Times, 31/3/2011  A young Indonesian maid fell 7 floors from the kitchen window. She died about an hour later in hospital.  The police found a pail of wet clothes beside the washing machine in the kitchen with its windows open.  Some pieces of clothing and bamboo poles were lying around the body at the foot of the block.  State Coroner found that she accidentally fell out of the window while putting out the laundry.  Link http://www.straitstimes.com/BreakingNews/Singapore/S tory/STIStory_651482.html http://www.straitstimes.com/BreakingNews/Singapore/S tory/STIStory_651482.html

Invention

Available Solutions

Pros and Cons -Nice Designs -More convenient to collect the clothes -Hold very little load -Additional Cost

Convention 245mm 150mm

Pros and Cons - Cheap to mass produce - Already available in many flats -Water can be collected inside the housing. -The angle is almost horizontal and you have to bend over quite a lot. -The angle increases the force being used as the other end (load) is far from the fulcrum.

Our idea

Description By having a pivoting joint at the end of the housing, we can change the position of the fulcrum to at the end of the housing. Having a choice to change the angle decreases the distance between the fulcrum and load. According to the lever physics, it will be lighter. Pros Less force needed Will not have to bend over our bodies so far as you can just pull it vertical and remove it from the housing. Materials Metal

Improvements from convention  The ability to change the angles decreases the distance between the fulcrum and the load, and causes the end of the pole to be nearer. Thus, less force is used.  Holes to be drilled to drain water collected in the housing. This helps to remove stagnant water.

Comparison Available Solutions Our invention More load, Less effort CheaperLittle loadExpensive

Conclusion: Our invention improves safety significantly while minimizing additional cost.
