Weather & Climate * Bell Ringer * Notes * Jolly Rancher Activity...

Weather... Weather is what it is doing right now. It could be raining or sunny, for example. BR: What is the weather like today?
3
Climate... Climate describes the range of what you might expect in a given location (the limits of what the weather might be). In Chicago, March can be warm or cool, somewhere between 40 degrees and 80 degrees, but it is highly unlikely to be 0 degrees or 100 degrees. Climate describes average weather. On any given day, it might be hot in Denver and cold in Miami, but on most days it's hotter in Miami than it is in Denver. Climate describes long-term trends. If it's cold for a few days, that's weather. If it's an ice age, that's climate.

Climate Demonstration Jolly Ranchers come in many different colors. Let's assign a type of weather to each color in the bag... Red: hot & sunny Pink: warm & overcast Green: cold & windy Purple: foggy & cool Blue: cold & snowy
5
Instructions Each table is going to pull out one Jolly Rancher from the bag. That represents the weather in Chicago for the first day of April. What kind of weather did you get?
6
Instructions (part 2) Whoever didn't pick a Jolly Rancher picks one now. What kind of weather did you get? Write this in your notebook. Overall as a class, what types of weather did we get and how frequently did we get each one? Write this in your notebook This average weather tells us the climate in Chicago. If we were to do this all over again, we wouldn't be able to predict the weather (what specific color you pull out) BUT we would be able to predict overall trends, like not having 10 purple candies in a row.
