The Five Paragraph Essay  Format:  Introduction  3 Body Paragraphs (bulk of essay)  Conclusion  This essay is used for many purposes: practice/assess writing skills, analytical skills, etc.  It is an individual’s response in a critical approach which shows depth and insight  Foundation and springboard for other essays

4. Introduction  Purpose:  To make the audience aware of the work(s) (in this case, Hamlet)  To offer the audience some details of the work(s) as they relate to the argument  To pose an argument (response to the prompt) as a basis for analysis

Introduction  Format:  Topic Sentence:  Author, title, and general information about the text/subject you will be discussing  5-7 sentences of summary based upon area of study  Might include the conflict, major and minor characters, setting  Primary Claim -your argument  last sentence of intro  author + verb + response to the prompt
