Missing Items Items are marked missing (“M”) on FRMS or DEFINE (NV1 screen 1) Departments must continue looking for University and privately owned items for at least two years If a non-federal item is not found within two years of being marked missing it will be written-off Do not change, update, or backdate the missing date of an item unless you actually find it

3. Missing Items Cont’d Backdating the missing date will not cause the item to be written-off quicker. Federal items will remain marked as missing until the department obtains approval from the sponsor to dispose of the items in question. If an item has been missing for more than 2 years but was never marked missing mark it missing at that point There is no need to submit an Inventory Removal Request (IRR) to remove missing items
