Warmup 10/27/15 Where do you think most of the world’s volcanoes are located? If you had to pick somewhere, where would you pick? Objective Tonight’s Homework To use research to discover the tectonic plate boundaries Read 5.14 to 5.18 do p 118: 1, 2, 4, 6, 7

Mapping Tectonics We’ve talked about Earth’s plates a little up to this point, but now it’s time to really look at things. We know Earth is made of large tectonic plates, but where are the edges to each? How might scientists learn about this?

Mapping Tectonics We’ve talked about Earth’s plates a little up to this point, but now that we’re in the chapter on earthquakes, it’s time to really look at things. We know Earth is made of large tectonic plates, but where are the edges to each? How might scientists learn about this? Volcanoes and earthquakes! It makes sense that if Earth’s plates are pulling apart, grinding, and going over and under each other, volcanoes and earthquakes are what we’d see.

Mapping Tectonics We’re going to map this as a class. Mr. C. has gathered data on 100 volcanoes and 100 earthquakes throughout the world. Each of you is going to graph 10 volcanoes and 10 earthquakes on your own map. You’re then going to come up and add your data to the large map that will be on the screen. When everyone is done, we’ll have a map with 200 data points on it! Your final job will be to draw on your own map where you think Earth’s tectonic plates have their boundaries.

Mapping Tectonics After finishing your own map, come up and add your data as dots using dry-erase marker.

Exit Question Which of the following areas has the most volcanoes and earthquakes? The middle of North America The middle of Australia The middle of Asia The west coast of South America The east coast of North America The north coast of Europe
