The trigger for the war was the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria, heir to the throne of Austria-Hungary, by a Yugoslav nationalist.
1 month later, Austria-Hungary declares war on Serbia.

Austria-Hungary & Germany are very close countries (alliance).
Germany then sends troops to France fearing they would enter to protect Russia.(Alliance)

8. After World War 1
the German Empire, Russian Empire, Austro-Hungarian Empire and the Ottoman Empire had ceased to exist.
National borders were redrawn, with several independent nations restored or created, and
Germany's colonies were parceled out among the winners. (Britain, France, the United States and Italy) imposed their terms in a series of treaties.
Treaty of Versailles was signed & the League of Nations was formed with the aim of preventing any repetition of such a conflict..
This, however, failed with economic depression, the Spanish flu of 1918, renewed European nationalism, weakened member states, and the German feeling of humiliation contributing to the rise of Nazism. These conditions eventually contributed to World War 2.

Before the United States came in and helped put an end to the war in 1945, Germany’ & Italy were ruled by Dictators.

After World War 2 (WW2) Germany was divided in half. East Germany was controlled by the communist Soviet Union (Russia). And West Germany was controlled by Western Powers (UK, France, USA)
From the Soviet Union controlled East Germany & most of Eastern Europe.
