ZEPHANIAH The Savior’s Summons to Satisfaction Jason S. DeRouchie, PhD Associate Professor of OT and Biblical Theology Bethlehem College & Seminary www.derouchie-meyer.org Bethlehem Baptist Church, Fall 2015

Stage 2 of the Savior’s Summons to Satisfaction OVERVIEW OF 3:8–20: o The Charge to Wait for the Lord (3:8a) o The Dual Basis of the Charge to the Wait (3:8b–10) o The Ultimate Motivation of the Charge to Wait (3:11–20) The promise that the Lord will not put Jerusalem to shame (3:11–13) A parenthetical call to rejoice in salvation (3:14–15) The promise that the Lord will bring consummate salvation (3:16–20)

The Promise of Salvation (3:16–20) The promise of a future call to not fear or lose hope (3:16–18) o The call to not fear or lose hope (v. 16) The timing: “on that day” (cf. v. 11) = today The audience: inhabitants of a transformed “Jerusalem/Zion” = the church The call: Don’t fear or lose hope

o A reason not to fear or lose hope (vv. 17–18) The reason: God’s presence with us (v. 17a) Its implication: God’s promise to save and celebrate over his redeemed (vv. 17b–18) o The promise made (v. 17b–e): To deliver (v. 17b) To celebrate us (v. 17c–e; cf. Isa 65:17– 19) o The proof that the promise will be fulfilled: a second exodus has already occurred (v. 18)

Isa 11:11, 16 In that day the Lord will extend his hand yet a second time to recover the remnant that remains of his people, from Assyria, from Egypt, from Pathros, from Cush, from Elam, from Shinar, from Hamath, and from the coastlands of the sea…. 16 And there will be a highway from Assyria for the remnant that remains of his people, as there was for Israel when they came up from the land of Egypt.

Isa 49:5–6 And now the LORD says, he who formed me from the womb to be his servant, to bring Jacob back to him; and that Israel might be gathered to him— for I am honored in the eyes of the LORD, and my God has become my strength— 6 he says: “It is too light a thing that you should be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob and to bring back the preserved of Israel; I will make you as a light for the nations, that my salvation may reach to the end of the earth.”

Jer 16:14–15 Therefore, behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD, when it shall no longer be said, “As the LORD lives who brought up the people of Israel out of the land of Egypt,” 15 but “As the LORD lives who brought up the people of Israel out of the north country and out of all the countries where he had driven them.” For I will bring them back to their own land that I gave to their fathers.

Luke 9:30–31 And behold, two men were talking with him, Moses and Elijah, 31 who appeared in glory and spoke of his departure,* which he was about to accomplish at Jerusalem. *exodus

John 11:50–52 [Caiaphas said,] ”It is better for you that one man should die for the people, not that the whole nation should perish.” 51 He did not say this of his own accord, but being high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus would die for the nation, 52 and not for the nation only, but also to gather into one the children of God who are scattered abroad.

The promise of save completely (3:19–20) o God declares his promise (3:19): The timing: “at that time” The promise: o He will put down oppressors (see 3:11, 15) o He will deliver and redeem the weak and outcast (cf. Mic 4:6–7; Matt 5:3–4; 11:4–5; John 11:50–51)
