10/2/2002MJL - MuTr DC Report Muon Tracking Status South North

10/2/2002MJL - MuTr DC Report South Arm HV tested for 2 days at operating after roll-in. - ok except for ~10 channels in station-1 FEE resting, but was working well last time it was turned on (about 4 weeks ago). Noise levels looked good: 1.63 (sta-1), 1.91 (sta-2), 1.85 (sta-3). Optical alignment beams maintained their position from before the move

10/2/2002MJL - MuTr DC Report RMS noise levels in South Arm Want less than 2 ADC counts in order to achieve 100 m resolution Looks good; particularly station-2 which is much better than last year 1.63 (sta-1), 1.91 (sta-2), 1.85 (sta-3) station-1 station-2 station-3 Station-2 South during run-II

10/2/2002MJL - MuTr DC Report North Arm All noise levels now good, even station-3 (see following slides) FEE ok except sta2/oct1/ch2 – may be fixed(?) HV problems: ~10 high-current channels in sta-1 (probably capacitors); unrepairable ~3 high-current channels in sta-3; capacitors pulled last night – may be ok(?) One broken anode wire in a plane of station-2 and –3 (1/6 of a gap in station-2 & 1/10 of a gap in station-3) Worry about un-calibrated HV values for our 1469 supplies given known problems with muID 1471’s; being investigated Optical alignment system for North still being adjusted, but so far working well Planned Schedule: 10/3?: Begin scaffolding removal 10/10?: Begin installing lampshade panels 10/16?: Closed ? Delay due to beam vacuum problems?

10/2/2002MJL - MuTr DC Report RMS noise levels in North Arm Need less than 2 ADC counts in order to achieve 100 m resolution All stations quite good; average rms noise levels : 1.5 (station-1), 1.5 (station-2) and 2.1 (station-3) Main improvements in station-3 noise levels from: Ground HV cable-shield ground only at chamber end Cover surfaces of chambers with 1 mil Al-foil RF shielding Various other grounding improvements also contributed, but at a lower level station-1 station-2 station-3
6
10/2/2002MJL - MuTr DC Report Improvement in station-3 North noise levels by adding Al-foil RF shielding Average RMS (ADC cnts): 3.5(before) --> 2.1(after) Station-3 copper cladding already there was ~ 0.7 mil Skin depth for 100khz ~ 0.8 mil So adding 1 mil Al approx. doubles RF shielding at 100khz

10/2/2002MJL - MuTr DC Report Electronics channel to strip mapping now done (we think). Initial cosmic ray running started for North using BLT, will become priority after North is closed. Goals include trying to get a handle on geometrical alignment before beam comes. Preparing geometry and codes to analyze North-arm data Bottom step-platform in North still interferes with alignment beams. Problems with operation of camera multiplexer being debugged. Automated calibrations of North & South mostly working which include analysis, zero-suppression update, recording in Objectivity, and updating web results page. Some problems with ArcNet & with Samba mounts of Web area to be investigated. Repairing TX & RX (copper fiber) transition boards – presently no north RX spares. Some Other Tr Activities
