1.3.2 Multiplication and Division of Real Numbers SWBAT: 1) Multiply and divide real numbers 2) Connect and analyze properties for all basic operations (multiply, divide, add, subtract)
2
Commutative Property – Any Order a b = b a 2 (-3) = (-3) 2 Associative Property – Any Grouping (a b) c = a (b c) (2 (-3)) 5 = 2 ((-3) 5) Identity Property a 1 = a 2 1 = 2 Inverse Property (reciprocal) a = 1 2 = 1 Property of Zero a 0 = 0 2 0 = 0 Property of -1 a -1 = -a 3 -1 = -3 -3 is called the opposite of 3
3
For any division or multiplication problem: Two numbers with the same sign result in a postive answer ◦ 2 3 = 6 ◦ -2 -3 = 6 Two numbers with different signes result in a negative answer ◦ 2 -3 = -6 ◦ -2 3 = -6
4
For: ◦ 3 5 = 3 Dividing by a number is the same as multiplying by a recipricol: Pair up and try this!
5
Questions: - Do the Commutative and Associative Properties apply for division? Why or why not? Provide examples to support your reasoning. Create real-life problems that could be solved by multiplying or dividing integers. Solve the problems or exchange with a partner.
