Properties Students will be able to use properties and mental math to find sums, differences, products, and quotients.
2
Review Lets review vocabulary terms: Sum Difference Product Quotient
3
Commutative When you ADD or MULTIPLY the order of the numbers does not matter. The property of reordering is the commutative property.
4
Commutative 3 x 9 can be written as 9 x 3, in case you don’t know your nines. 26 + 25 + 4 can be written as 26 + 4 + 25
5
Associative When you ADD or MULTIPLY the order of the numbers does not matter. The property of regrouping is the associative property.
6
Associative (26 + 25) + 4 can be regrouped as (26 + 4) + 25 (2 x 9) x 5 can be regrouped as 2 x (9 x 5)
7
Identity When you ADD a zero to a number, you get that number. When you MULTIPLY a number by one, you get that number. This is known as the identity property.
8
Identity 45 + 0 = 45 89 x 1 = 89
9
Distributive We have discussed four ways to write multiplication. What are the four ways?
10
Distributive 7 x 5 7(5) 7 ● 5 7a
11
Distributive 7(5) is the basis for the distributive property. 7(3 + 2), the seven can be distributed through the parentheses to make the problem 21 + 14.
12
Subtract/Divide Notice: There are no properties for subtraction and division. The order is very important to these problems!
