The Podiatrists Role The podiatrist can provide a diagnosis, and then either manage the condition or refer appropriately. Treatment may take the form of footwear advice, biomechanical assessment, provision of orthoses (specialist insoles), active hands on treatment and health education.

Top Tips Feet measured regularly. Unusual wear on the soles of shoes. Alternate shoes. Areas of concern. Itchy Feet. Good Hygiene. Toenails.

The Shoes To Go For… School Shoes: Feet individually measured for width and length. Toe area is foot shaped. Fits Snug. Held secure by Velcro, laces or a strap. Made of leather. Trainers: Foot friendly. Cushioning. Shock absorption. Supportive. ‘Fashion’ shoes – best worn over short periods/special occasions.

What teachers can do: Set an example with your own footwear. Discuss foot health and foot issues with the children. Review school guidelines on shoes – trainers are better the plimsolls. What parents can do: Ensure your child has their feet measured by a trained shoe fitter. Find a compromise. Discuss with other mums or children. Check their feet regularly. How Can You Help?

Encourage Your Children to… Be sensible with the shoes that they wear most often. Report a foot problem to you as their parents or teachers as soon as it happens.
